Once you’re enrolled in the Advanced Electrical – Overhead Line Construction program, you’ll be trained in several areas with an emphasis on hands-on training that will prepare you for high-skill, quality employment.

On the job, you will:

  • Install and repair electrical power systems and telecommunications cables
  • Identify defective devices; inspect and test power lines and other equipment; string lines between poles, towers and buildings by climbing poles and towers or using truck-mounted buckets
  • Follow safety standards and procedures
  • Learn proper tech and procedures for climbing different types of structures

The credentials you'll earn:

This is the first level of Advanced Training offered in the Advanced Electrical series. In the Advanced Electrical – Overhead Line Construction training program, you will earn industry-recognized credentials from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), Altec and Safety LMS, and OSHA. Students should also earn a state-issued learner’s permit and driver’s license upon completion of the program.

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or the equivalent (can be earned at all Job Corps centers)
  • Complete Job Corps’ basic Electrical, Facilities Maintenance, Building Construction Technology, Network Cabling or Urban Forestry training program
  • Meet academic (math and reading) requirements
  • At least 18 years old

  • Positive attendance and progress record
  • Written recommendation from Job Corps center personnel
  • Health clearance at current center
  • Strong work ethic and determination to succeed
  • Complete an in-person or phone interview

Adam Cantu

Adam Cantu joined Gary Job Corps Center as an Advanced Overhead Lineman instructor in 2010. Before this, he completed his journeyman and lineman apprenticeship certification and worked at Toledo Edison Company in Ohio. Throughout his lineman career, Adam trained new hires, preparing him to lead and instruct Job Corps students today.

Oneonta Job Corps Center

Keion excelled in his basic training at Iroquois Job Corps Center and graduated in April 2021. He then was selected for Advanced Training and transferred to Oneonta Job Corps, where he began the Electrical Overhead Line Advanced Training program.
