Are you interested in hands-on, fast-paced environments? Have strong attention to detail and work well with machinery? Then you may be a good fit for Job Corps’ Advanced HVAC, Preventive Maintenance Technician program. Pre-apprenticeships are focused on preparing students for a successful experience in a Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP). That means your hands-on training will be based on industry standards in order to prepare you for high-skill, quality employment.

On the job, you will:

Install, clean and maintain HVAC units and check for proper heating and cooling processes
Identify and perform maintenance on HVAC units, including safety, brazing, recovery, dehydration and charging
Work with residential and commercial control systems, including units with single- and three-phase electrical motors

The credentials you'll earn:

In the Advanced HVAC, Preventive Maintenance Technician program, you can earn industry-recognized credentials from such organizations as:

National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) –Residential Construction Academy
Energy Services Company (ESCO)
North American Technician Excellence (NATE)
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)

Students should also earn a state-issued learner’s permit and driver’s license upon completion of the program.

Most HVAC Job Corps graduates go on to work for home services companies, which specialize in the repair and maintenance of HVAC units. These jobs could be in homes, schools, stores, hospitals, office buildings or factories. Some technicians are assigned to specific job sites at the beginning of each day, while others travel to several different locations, making service calls.

Requirements:

High school diploma or the equivalent (can be earned at all Job Corps centers)
Complete a Job Corps basic training program
Meet academic (math and reading) requirements
At least 17 years old

Positive attendance and progress record
Written recommendation from Job Corps center personnel
Health clearance at current center
Strong work ethic and determination to succeed
